City of Charleston Hurricane Irma Preparations September 10th Update

Mayor John J. Tecklenburg and city of Charleston officials met today with Charleston County and other area officials to finalize plans to open shelters for citizens who live in low-lying areas.

Two shelters are open at Charleston County facilities at 3765 Leeds Avenue and 3841 Leeds Avenue. The shelter at 3841 Leeds Avenue will not accept pets. Both people and their pets are accepted at the shelter at 3765 Leeds Avenue. Additional shelters will be opened as needed.

The Charleston County transportation plan was activated at 1 p.m. today and free buses will run until 8 p.m. Buses will resume free transportation to the shelters tomorrow at 8 a.m., as long as wind speeds allow. City residents can use any of these pick-up locations.

For transportation questions citizens should call the County Citizen information line at 843-746-3900. Those with special medical needs should call the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control medical assistance line at 1-800-578-2031.

Mayor Tecklenburg said, “We urge all citizens who live in a low-lying areas that typically flood to consider staying with a friend or relative or taking advantage of one of the shelters until flooding has passed. Heavy rainfall, high winds and storm surge—particularly on Monday between 10 am and 4 pm—is expected. If your property has flooded in the past, it will likely flood again.”

City garbage and trash collections will be suspended Monday, September 11 and are expected to resume Tuesday, September 12 on a one-day delay (Monday routes picked up Tuesday, Tuesday routes on Wednesday, etc.).

City parking garages remain free for residents to park their cars throughout the duration of the storm, excluding the Gaillard Center parking garage (33 Alexander Street). Garage openings are for cars only, and do not apply to boats or trailers. A full list of city of Charleston garages can be found at www.charleston-sc.gov/parking-information.
