Tourism Management Plan Update

Preserving and enhancing the city’s quality of life amidst a vibrant hospitality sector requires careful planning and management.  The City of Charleston, a leader in tourism management, has embarked on an important process to update the City’s Tourism Management Plan.  The first Tourism Management Plan in the country was adopted by the City in 1978 and subsequently updated in 1994 and 1998.  The update to the plan is being led by the Department of Planning, Preservation & Sustainability with the assistance of an advisory committee of community leaders appointed by Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr.  The committee is chaired by Katharine S. Robinson, President and C.E.O. of Historic Charleston Foundation.  The committee met for a year and completed its work in December, 2014.

A key element of the process of updating the plan is citizen input.  The City held its first Tourism Management Forum on April 7 and a second one on June 12.  These meetings provided an opportunity for citizens to learn about the plan and share ideas which will then be incorporated into the plan.  At the first meeting, the City received over 200 comments related to issues and solutions concerning transportation, special events, city image, visitor orientation and others which were used by the advisory committee as it proceeded with its work.  You can find both of those meetings’ notes below on this same page.  In addition to the public meetings, a resident questionnaire was conducted by the College of Charleston to obtain additional feedback and downtown neighborhood associations submitted neighborhood issues.  These findings are included with the documents below.

A public meeting was held on Monday, February 2nd at the Charleston Museum to present the recommendations and obtain feedback.  The final report can be found below.
