2017 Youth & Adult Programs

Beyond BASIC #230001 
Dates/Times: Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays from 9:00am-5:00pm 
Location: Shaw Community Center
Cost: $168/session
Call for Semester dates (semesters run in 6 week intervals) 
Ages: Teens & Adults

Beyond BASIC is a day program that encourages learning life skills beyond the basics that encourages individuals in the community become more independent. Participants will focus and develop skills in the five elements that make up the programs foundation; social skills, health awareness, independent living skills, increased self-esteem and personal areas of interest. 

Special Chef’s Cooking Class #230310 
Dates: May 10-24
Dates: Wednesdays 6:00pm-8:00pm
Location: Hazel Parker Playground 
Cost: $40 Registration Fee
Ages: 10 yrs-adult, all abilities

Chefs will experience first-hand the life skills of cooking basic meals. Students are hands on from choosing the ingredients, to kitchen cleanliness to setting the table. Chefs receive a cook book at the end of the session and dinner is served nightly. Spaces limited and registration is open on a first come first serve basis. 

Unified Players (theater) #230100/430110
Dates: January 19-April 20, August 24-November 16
Time: Thursdays from 6:00-8:00pm
Location: Hazel Parker Playground 
Cost: $30 Registration Fee
Ages: All ages, all abilities

Participants will learn all aspects of theater. Actors will rehearse and learn lines and blocking for a chosen play and will participate in performing the show on stage or behind the scenes.

Unified Basketball #130500
Dates: January 24-April 4 
Time: Tuesdays from 6:00-7:00pm

Cost: $30 Registration Fee
Ages: 10 yrs-adult, all abilities

Participants will learn the basic skills of basketball including ball handling, shooting, rebound passing, catching and dribbling, as well as the fundamentals of the game. Athletes will have the opportunity to compete in City of Charleston local Basketball Tournament.

The City of Charleston Unified Basketball Tournament will be held on Saturday, March, 25th at Bees Landing Recreation Center! 

Unified Cheerleading #430400

Time: Tuesdays from 6:00-7:00pm

Ages: All ages, all abilities

Cheerleaders will get the opportunity to cheer for the Swamp Fox basketball team and will also have the chance to compete in local competitions.

Time: Wednesdays from 6:30pm-7:30pm
Location: W.L. Stephens Pool (West Ashley)
Cost: $30 Registration Fee
Ages: 10 yrs-adult, all abilities

Athletes will learn the skills and fundamentals of swimming. The Fall swim is a fun swim. Practices will focus on just being in the water and will not be competitive. The winter fun swim is a perfect opportunity to get used to swimming. The Unified Swim Team in the Spring months is a competitive swim team that will practice to compete in the local swim meet and travel to Special Olympics Summer Games in Fort Jackson.

Ages: 9 yrs-adult, all abilities

Participants will learn the basic skills and fundamentals for competitive bowling. Athletes will have the opportunity to compete in Summer Special Olympics (under 21) and Fall Games (over 21).

Unified Players Performances (Theater) 
Dates: April & November 2017 (Call for exact show dates) 
Time: Fridays at 7:00pm 
Location: College of Charleston Black Box Theater 
Ages: All ages, all abilities

Join us for a theatrical evening showcasing the program that our wonderful actors practiced and perform live for you on stage. Seats fill quickly, so arrive early! After the show, meet and greet the actors and stage crew, and stay for refreshments. 

Unified Summer Sports Series #430280

Location: Forest Park Playground

Ages: 9 yrs-adult, all abilities

Participants get a chance to try different sports-related activities each night. They will also learn about good health and nutrition by taking part in creating a healthy meal to share with the group. This program is run in partnership with the Citadel Leadership Program and the PlayToday! Foundation.

Ages: 10 yrs-adult, all abilities

Athletes will learn skills, short court and full court fundamentals. Players will have the chance to play singles or doubles games. Players will have the opportunity to go to the Special Olympics Hilton Head Tennis Invitational in October.

Location: Charleston Municipal Golf Course
Cost: $30 Registration Fee
Ages: 10 yrs-adult, all abilities

Players will learn the basic rules, etiquette, skills, and fundamentals of Golf. Players will have the opportunity to compete in Special Olympics Fall Games held in Greenville, SC.


CCSD Special Events

Sportsational #133010

Location: James Island Rec Complex

Ages: Elementary, Middle and High school students

Sportsational is for students of special needs classrooms in the Charleston County School District to spend the day participating in different sport activities such as basketball, tennis, small games, gymnastics, and jump castles. City of Charleston Police and Fire fighters teach us about safety and we end the day with lunch and awards.

Sun and Fun Bocce Invitational #430020

Ages: Elementary, Middle and High school students

Sun and Fun is fun day for children in the Charleston County School District to come out to a City of Charleston Recreation facility to participate in different activities such as swimming, basketball, tennis, bocce, and wiffle ball. This tournament is a Special Olympics sanctioned event.

Dinner and a Movie Nights #330401

Join us for dinner in the food court at 5:30pm and then at 6:30pm we will walk through the mall across the parking lot to the Citadel IMAX Theater for a family friendly flick!

Tourist in Your Own Town #330402

Spend the day with us being a tourist in your own town! The group takes trips to different historical locations all around the Lowcountry to explore the beautiful city we call home. Pack a lunch, wear comfortable shoes, bring your camera, and make plans to attend our next tourist event!

Summer Camps

Performing Arts Summer Camp #331002

The performing arts camp is the best way for you to express yourself. The camp focuses on Stage Theater performances. Projection, character development, lighting, sound, costume and improvisation are all skills gained during this week long theater experience. A performance will be held for family and friends on the last night of camp.
