BAR Process Updates
Overview

The City of Charleston Planning Department, in partnership with Historic Charleston Foundation and the consultant team of Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company (DPZ), has carefully evaluated two key components of the built environment in Charleston – the Board of Architectural Review (BAR) and the allowable height zoning map.  Over two years, the project team has collected feedback at multiple stakeholder meetings including the public, property owners, members of the development and architectural professional communities, and preservation groups.  The proposed ordinances were given first reading by Charleston City Council on February 14, 2017.  Since the first reading, both the ordinance language and height map have continued to be refined, and the most recent versions of the drafts are included below.
