Public Information
Public Information acts as liaison for local, state and national media on behalf of the city. The division provides a proper spokesperson for specific issues and provides any background information necessary for clarity of issues for the media.

This division also provides coordination for specific projects which involve media participation or any other city function which will be featured by local media.

This division also advises personnel on how to deal with media inquiries and provides training for designated City staff who regularly deal with reporters and media requests. Information and planning is also offered to departments on methods of communication about programs and events.

Additional Responsibilities
The director also plans and coordinates press conferences, prepares press releases, and notifies media of city events. The division coordinates city ceremonies such as ribbon cuttings, ground breaking ceremonies, and special announcements for the City of Charleston and its departments.

The division also:
  • Reviews publications produced by other departments and assistance in development, creation, and dissemination of these publications
  • Prepares vital information for the mayor for participation in outside public events
  • Produces, plans and coordinates content and design for the City of Charleston website.

Mission
The mission of Public Information is to:

  • Facilitate internal and external communications
  • Communicate to the general public any information which may affect or benefit them as residents and visitors in the City of Charleston
  • Communicate to staff of the City of Charleston

The division also communicates to staff of the City of Charleston any information that will inform employees about the city and their tasks.
