NIST Reports
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The Fire Research Division develops, verifies, and utilizes measurements and predictive methods to quantify the behavior of fire and means to reduce the impact of fire on people and property.

The attached report details the NIST study of the June 18, 2007, fire at the Charleston Sofa Super Store. The study team from NIST reviewed major contributing factors and made recommendations for enhancing building, occupant, and firefighter safety nationwide. In particular, the team urged state and local communities to adopt and strictly adhere to current national model building and fire safety codes.
