AmeriCorps VISTA

Two members of VISTA

The City of Charleston is pleased to serve as the local sponsor for the AmeriCorps VISTA Project in Charleston, SC.

History of the Program

AmeriCorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. Authorized in 1964, VISTA has been on the front lines in the fight against poverty in America for more than 45 years.

Purpose

VISTA members commit to serve full-time for a year at a nonprofit organization, public agency, or local government agency with programs that:

  • Fight illiteracy
  • Foster economic development
  • Improve health services
  • Otherwise assist low-income communities

VISTA members generally do not provide direct services; instead, they strengthen and support organizations by building infrastructure, expanding community partnerships, securing long-term resources, coordinating training for participants, and much more.
