Police Investigate Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision on Spring Street

 

 

Charleston, S.C. - The Charleston Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is investigating a fatal collision involving a pedestrian and motor vehicle. This collision occurred on February 3, 2023, at 6:15 am on Spring Street near the intersection of Hagood Avenue.

A motor vehicle was traveling westbound on Spring Street when it struck a pedestrian. The pedestrian was attempting to cross to the south side of Spring Street. There is not a crosswalk to cross over Spring Street at this specific location. The road conditions were wet and the lighting was dark. First Responders arrived at the scene to treat the injured pedestrian. The male victim was transported to MUSC but unfortunately was pronounced deceased.

The driver of the vehicle involved remained on the scene, showed no signs of impairment, and cooperated with investigators. MAIT investigators closed Spring Street between Hagood Avenue and Lockwood Boulevard while they completed their investigation. The roadway was reopened at 9:15 am to vehicular traffic.

This fatal collision remains under investigation. No charges have been filed at this time. The Charleston County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased.

This fatal accident is the third (3rd) fatal collision investigated by the Charleston Police Department in 2023.
