Charleston Police Investigate Fatal Collision on Sam Rittenberg Boulevard      

 

Charleston, S.C. - The Charleston Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is investigating a fatal collision involving two motor vehicles that occurred on May 6th, 2023, at 4:50 pm on the 1400 block of Sam Rittenberg Boulevard.

 

A motor vehicle was traveling southbound on Sam Rittenberg Blvd (SC-7) when it crossed into the opposing lanes of travel, striking a northbound vehicle. The male driver of the southbound vehicle was ejected and pronounced deceased on the scene. CPD patrol officers, along with the Saint Andrews Fire Department and Charleston County EMS, responded to the scene. The two occupants of the northbound vehicle were transported to MUSC with significant injuries. 

MAIT investigators closed Sam Rittenberg Blvd. in both directions between Charlestowne Drive and Amberly Road while they completed their investigation. The roadway was reopened at 9:30 pm. 

This fatal collision remains under investigation. No charges have been filed at this time. The Charleston County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased.

This fatal collision is the eighth (8th) fatal collision investigated by the Charleston Police Department in 2023.

CPD investigated four (4) traffic-related fatalities at this time in 2022.
