Charleston Police Department Presents Inaugural Executive Leadership Summit
Charleston, S.C. - The Charleston Police Department is proud to announce the commencement of the inaugural “Charleston Police Executive Leadership Summit” this week.
The Leadership Summit brings together 12 police executives from 8 different agencies across the state of South Carolina. This comprehensive program, spanning over a 6-month period, requires participants to travel to Charleston for two days each month. Its primary objective is to equip law enforcement executives with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively lead in a modern law enforcement agency.
The Charleston Police Executive Leadership Summit offers a unique blend of theory and practical application, focusing on essential aspects such as leadership, self-development, team building, and community engagement. Through these training sessions, participants will gain valuable insights and tools to navigate the complex challenges faced by law enforcement professionals today.
During the first block of instruction, attendees were privileged to hear from esteemed speakers who shared their expertise on pertinent topics. Ms. Brittany Tulla, owner/consultant of BVL of historic preservation, emphasized the importance of police organizations understanding the history of the communities they serve. Mr. Gil Kerlikowske, renowned for his distinguished 40-year career as a law enforcement executive, provided valuable insights on micro and macro contemporary issues in law enforcement and the challenges faced by the profession in the present time. Lastly, Ms. Mary Hoerig delivered a compelling presentation titled “Fair and Impartial Policing for Managers,” highlighting the significance of police legitimacy and procedural justice within law enforcement organizations.
Captain Cretella said, “This visionary initiative was conceived by Chief Reynolds when he joined the Charleston Police Department in 2018. Recognizing the need for advanced, accessible police executive leadership education across the state of South Carolina, he played a pivotal role in the initial development plan and partnered the leadership team with Ms. Anna Laszlo, who assisted in the curriculum development.”
The successful execution of the Charleston Police Executive Leadership Summit would not have been possible without the generous contributions from the Charleston Rotary Club and the LENS Foundation. Their support has made a significant impact, enabling the realization of this vital program and the enhancement of law enforcement leadership across South Carolina.
