Mayor Tecklenburg Appoints Deputy Chief Chito Walker as Interim Chief of Police

 

Charleston, S.C. - The Charleston Police Department is pleased to announce the appointment of Deputy Chief Chito Walker as the Interim Chief of Police by Mayor Tecklenburg. With his extensive experience and exemplary service, Chief Walker is well-positioned to lead the department during this transitional period.

 

Chief Walker joined the Charleston Police Department in 2000, launching a distinguished law enforcement career marked by unwavering dedication and leadership. He has held many roles within the department, including patrolman, detective, SWAT team operator, and supervisor. Promoted to Deputy Chief in March 2020, Chief Walker most recently served as Deputy Chief of the Procedural Justice and Community Policing Bureau.

 

As the newly appointed Interim Chief of Police, Chief Walker will provide strategic guidance and ensure the effective functioning of the Charleston Police Department. His exceptional leadership skills, extensive law enforcement knowledge, and strong community relationships will be invaluable in maintaining public safety and fostering positive community engagement. Accepting the appointment, Chief Walker said:

 

I would like to extend my gratitude to Mayor Tecklenburg for entrusting me with this opportunity. I also want to acknowledge the remarkable men and women of the Charleston Police Department. Their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to public safety are truly commendable. It is through their hard work that our community thrives, and I am proud to be a part of this exceptional team.

 

As we move forward, our department will remain progressive and committed to continuously improving the quality of life for all who reside in and visit Charleston. Building strong community relationships will be a cornerstone of our approach, fostering trust, cooperation, and unity among our diverse population.

Chief Walker will begin this role effective July 12th, 2023.
