The city of Charleston recently announced the completion of deep tunnel construction related to the Medical District Drainage Tunnel Extension project, marking a major milestone in the city’s efforts to combat flooding in the Medical District and improve access to the area’s lifesaving hospitals.
The newly completed drop shaft and deep tunnel system, which includes more than 900 linear feet of concrete-lined stormwater tunneling located 130 feet below ground, are designed to tie into the city’s existing Spring-Fishburne deep tunnel and pump systems, which drain street-level stormwater collection systems into the Ashley River.
The Medical District Drainage Tunnel Extension project, which broke ground in May 2022, is on track to be completed in early 2024.
