City Update on Sandbags, Parking for Tropical Storm Hermine
The City of Charleston has a limited number of free sandbags available to assist residents who anticipate localized flooding. The sandbags may be picked up from two locations:
- City of Charleston Bees Ferry Fire Station at 1985 Bees Ferry Road, where sandbags can be picked up until dusk Thursday night. This location will open again at 7:00 a.m. Friday morning.
- Also, residents may pick up sandbags from the Milford Street Public Works Operations Complex at 2150 Milford Street, which will be open until 7:00 p.m. Thursday night. This location will open again at 7:30 a.m. Friday morning. Enter the first gate on the right hand side and proceed to the rear of the complex.
Residents are limited to 15 sandbags per household.
Sandbags can be purchased at any Lowes in the Charleston area.
Residents who live in flood prone areas within the City may park their vehicles free at the City of Charleston Aquarium parking garage located at 24 Calhoun Street beginning at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, September 1, 2016. Cars must be removed by noon on Saturday, September 3. Residents should take a parking ticket from the machine, proceed to the top two decks to park and, when checking out, be prepared to show proof of residency to the attendant.

City of Charleston Prepares for Tropical Storm Hermine
The city’s Emergency Management Department is in close communication with Charleston County and other local agencies about the potential for severe weather and receives frequent updates from the National Weather Service.
Public Service Department employees have been cleaning streets and clearing drains, ditches and basins in anticipation of the heavy rains and high tides.
Charleston Police Department is pre-positioning barricades at intersections and will have extra officers working during the storm to monitor road conditions and close roads when necessary.
Charleston Fire Department, in addition to normal staffing, will have two additional quick response units positioned downtown and in West Ashley.
As of now, the city of Charleston will open its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) Friday morning to manage the city response to the storm. Representatives from throughout the city including Police, Fire, Public Service and Parks will staff the EOC to ensure a quick an efficient response to any issues caused by the storm.
City of Charleston Emergency Management Director, Mark Wilbert, said, “With the storm's track still changing by the hour, we're currently requesting that residents make appropriate preparations for the possibility of severe weather beginning as early as Thursday night, and carefully monitor local media outlets for further information and instructions as they become available.”
