[ARCHIVED] Submit a Complaint or Compliment about a Charleston Police Officer Online

It is now possible to register a complaint or compliment about a Charleston Police Department officer online through the Professional Standards Office.

What is the Professional Standards Office?

It is CPD’s goal to provide highest level of quality enforcement service to the law all citizens. CPD promotes close working relationships with the community, and we are committed to ensuring that our employees perform their duties with professional competence and discipline. Policing is a very difficult and complex job in today’s society, and we realize that mistakes can be made, and you may feel that the actions of our personnel fell short of your expectations.

The Professional Standards Office is responsible for maintaining and, where possible, increasing the integrity of the Charleston Police Department by either monitoring or conducting full, fair, and objective investigations of all complaints against the Department, or allegations of misconduct on the part of members and employees of the Department.

What is a complaint?
A complaint is defined as an expression of discontent, dissatisfaction or accusation made in a written or verbal form that alleges illegal activity, misconduct, or a violation of rules or regulations of the police department or of the City of Charleston.

Why should I file a complaint?
Your complaint is important to us. We pride ourselves on maintaining an open line of communication with the public and citizens we are sworn to protect. We are committed to receiving and accepting complaints about the actions and performance of all personnel.

How do I Compliment an Officer?

In addition to investigating citizen concerns regarding officer performance, Chief Mullen is dedicated to commending the officers and reinforcing good police work and positive public interaction. Commendations are placed in the officer's file and may even result in an award from the Chief. You can compliment an officer through the following:
