Annual Summer Service Learning Institute to Begin in June

Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) of Charleston will hold their annual Summer Service-Learning Institute (SSLI) this summer to provide rising 7th and 8th graders (current 6th and 7th graders) in Charleston County an opportunity to have productive summer breaks spent giving back to their community.

Each week of the SSLI will focus on a unique community need, which participating youth will work together to address through volunteerism.

Four sessions will be held on June 11-14 (Intergenerational Week), June 18-21 (Environmental Week), July 9-12 (Nutrition Week), and July 16-19 (Wild Card Week) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Youth may register for one or more sessions, and are asked to attend all scheduled activities.

YVC of Charleston Program Director Jennifer Gorham said, “Each year, the SSLI grants youth volunteers a better sense of community and good citizenship while they gain hands-on experience in communication, leadership and teamwork.  To date, over 50 youth have attended the SSLI, giving over 670 volunteer hours at 36 unique projects, and we look forward to building on that success in the coming months.”

Participating youth are responsible for their own lunch and transportation each day. Scholarships are available to those who are eligible to apply. Learn more by emailing Jennifer Gorham at
