Public Input Sought for Redevelopment of Northbridge Piggly Wiggly Site

The city of Charleston and West Ashley Revitalization Commission will hold two open-house public input sessions to discuss redevelopment ideas for the former Northbridge Piggly Wiggly site on Tuesday, July 10 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday, July 11 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Schoolhouse, located at 720 Magnolia Road.

The Northbridge Piggly Wiggly site, located at the intersection of Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Old Towne Road on Sumar Street, and the surrounding area were identified in Plan West Ashley as focus areas and opportunities for change and improvements. The site was acquired by the city of Charleston in 2017 after Piggly Wiggly closed its store in 2013. Demolition of the structure began in May 2018 as a first step toward establishing a better use for the space.

Jacob Lindsey, city of Charleston Director of Planning, Preservation, and Sustainability, said, “Input from the residents of West Ashley will be critical in shaping the future of the old Piggly Wiggly property. We look forward to collaborating with members of the community to determine the best possible future use for this site.”

Citizens can drop by the public input session at any time and are encouraged to provide input by taking a short online survey, linked here:
