[ARCHIVED] Eastside Job Expo offers a range of job opportunities

Citizens seeking employment opportunities are invited to the Eastside Community JOB EXPO, on Saturday, December 1, 2018, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at St. Julian Devine Community Center, located at 1 Cooper Street, Charleston.

The event, sponsored by the City of Charleston, Charleston Housing Authority, Eastside Community Development Corporation (ECDC), and M. B. Kahn Construction Company is free and open to the public.

The Eastside JOB EXPO will feature temporary and permanent employment opportunities in construction trades, the hospitality sector and the Charleston Police Department, as well as workshops on resume writing and expungement process information.

Several temporary employment agencies will be taking applications for possible construction work on Grace Homes, an affordable housing development for the Housing Authority of Charleston. Grace Homes will be located on the peninsula on the Eastside, and is scheduled for completion in February of 2020. M. B. Kahn Construction Co., Inc. is the builder and construction management company for Grace Homes.

Explore Charleston’s Workforce Development team will take applications and resumes for hospitality sector job opportunities in area hotels and restaurants. And, the City of Charleston Police Department will provide employment information and giveaways.

From 11 a.m. until noon there will be workshops on resume writing and soft employment skills conducted by the City of Charleston, ECDC and R3 Inc.

Beginning at noon until 1 p.m., Charleston Pro Bono Legal Services will hold an Expungement Information workshop with volunteer attorney David Aylor. Often important to those seeking employment, expungement is a process in which the legal record of an arrest or criminal conviction is sealed or erased in the eyes of the law. Workshop participants will have an opportunity to learn about the difference between expungement and a pardon, and the application process required for both.

Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg, Police Chief Luther Reynolds and ECDC President Latonya Gamble will be guest speakers at the JOB EXPO.

For JOB EXPO information call any of the event co-sponsors: City of Charleston at 843-579-7530, ECDC at 843-952-7193 or Housing Authority of Charleston at 843-720-5345.
