[ARCHIVED] City of Charleston Moves to OPCON 2, Officials Continue to Monitor Storm

At 1 p.m. today, the city of Charleston shifted to OPCON 2, in coordination with Charleston County, as city officials continue to monitor and prepare for Hurricane Dorian.

Charleston City Council held a telephonic meeting at 3 p.m. today to discuss preparations for Hurricane Dorian and potential local impacts.

Following Governor McMaster’s lead, the city of Charleston has likewise declared a state of emergency, which will ensure that the city’s preparations are eligible for financial aid.

The Municipal Emergency Operations Center (MEOC) will be activated at 8 a.m., Sunday, September 1 and will remain open as needed throughout the storm.

The city’s Stormwater Department has secured temporary pumps to position in low-lying areas prone to flooding.

Mayor John Tecklenburg said, “While the exact path of Hurricane Dorian is still subject to change, we feel confident that Charleston will see some of the storm’s effects in the next few days. With that in mind, we encourage citizens to take this time to prepare by coordinating with family members and gathering any needed emergency supplies.”

City officials will remain in close communication with Charleston County and other local agencies through the weekend, and will continue to receive regular updates from the National Weather Service regarding the storm’s track and potential local impacts.

Residents are encouraged to review the city’s Hurricane Information webpage, which can be accessed at http://www.charleston-sc.gov/hurricane-information.

For the most accurate and up-to-date weather forecasts, residents should stay tuned to the National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service Charleston websites, as well as local media. Additional hurricane preparedness information can be found at www.scemd.org.
