[ARCHIVED] City of Charleston September 3 Hurricane Dorian PM Update

As of 4 p.m. today, area landfills have closed and garbage and trash collection has been suspended in all areas of the city until further notice.

Citizens are urged to clear any curbside garbage cans and bags and secure any loose yard debris as soon as possible, as these items are likely to block storm drains and inhibit drainage if left out during the storm.

Based on information from the National Weather Service, “major, life-threatening storm surge flooding is expected to develop as Dorian passes offshore.” Additionally, “Tropical Storm force winds are likely and hurricane force winds are possible near the coast.”

Tides are expected to increase significantly Wednesday afternoon into Thursday and are likely to cause major tidal flooding. A 10.3-foot high tide is predicted in Charleston Thursday morning.

Due to the predicted storm surge and increasing tides, citizens and visitors are asked to avoid parking along the Battery until further notice. Additionally, any residents who park in low-lying areas prone to flooding are encouraged to move their cars to higher ground or a city parking garage.

City emergency management officials warn that, should conditions deteriorate significantly, rescue operations may be temporarily suspended for the safety of first responders.

During their 1:30 p.m. telephonic meeting, Charleston City Council unanimously approved a set of emergency ordinances designed to prohibit price gouging and enable emergency road closures. At this time, these emergency ordinances do not order or authorize curfews.

Since 8 a.m. yesterday morning, 74,970 sandbags have been distributed to residents. Tomorrow will be the final day of distribution, which will take place from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. while supplies last at the following self-serve locations:

  • 14 Sumar Street (Old Piggly Wiggly site)
  • West Ashley Park, 3601 Mary Ader Avenue
  • James Island Town Hall, 1122 Dills Bluff Road
  • Grace Bridge Street Parking Lot, 5 Grace Bridge Street
  • Volvo Car Stadium, 161 Seven Farms Drive

Residents should bring their own shovels for assembly. Staff will be on-site to provide assistance, as needed.

A limit of 10 sandbags per car will apply to all residents visiting these locations. To purchase additional sandbags, citizens should contact a local home hardware store.
