[ARCHIVED] City of Charleston to Give Away Free Reusable Bags and Straws at Upcoming Workshops for Residents

Residents are encouraged to join one of two free workshops designed to provide tools and resources that will help support a smooth community-wide transition to the City's new single-use plastic regulations that take effect January 1, 2020.

The following workshops are being hosted by the city of Charleston Sustainability division:

Sunday, December 8, 1 to 2 p.m.
Frothy Beard Brewing Company
1401 Sam Rittenberg Blvd., Charleston, SC 29407

Wednesday, December 11, 6 to 7 p.m.
Eastside Community Development Corporation
60 America Street, Charleston, SC 29403

Open to all residents in and around the City of Charleston, the workshops will include a review of the new city code, tips and creative ideas to avoid using single-use plastics, information about recycling and composting programs and suggestions for how residents can help be part of a community-wide solution to protect the beauty and livability of the Charleston region. In addition, free reusable bags and straws will be available to those in attendance.

In November of 2018, City Council voted to pass an ordinance requiring operations throughout the City of Charleston to eliminate single-use plastic carryout and merchandise bags, as well as certain plastic carryout and food packaging items. More information about the ordinance can be found here: www.charleston-sc.gov/plastic.
