Any record created by an office of the City of Charleston is a public record and is under the jurisdiction of the Public Records Act of South Carolina (Title 30 of the South Carolina Code of Laws). Section Four of the act is known as the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
Please note that the Records Management Division does not process any FOIA requests, nor can we respond to any inquiries regarding the status of requests. Additionally, the Records Management Division does not retain any Charleston Police Department records; any FOIA requests for CPD records must go through the FOIA processing portal where they will be redirect to CPD records management staff.
