The City of Charleston is excited to announce a new customer service initiative located within the Permit Center: a Flex Station! This will be located at Station 4 and tentatively scheduled to begin on January 22, 2024. This station will be staffed by various city divisions who don't already have a regular station within the Permit Center. Each division will have a set shift each week with personnel scheduled to work Station 4 to allow for walk-in appointments with staff. We encourage you to come in and visit staff with any questions, comments, or concerns you may have for their division. We hope to see you soon!
When visiting the Permit Center:
Applicants are encouraged to have all appropriate applications completed prior to entering the Permit Center. We happy to help in person or via firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions.
We highly recommend that you apply for a Customer Self service (CSS) account. Approval can take up to 3 business days. This account allows you to submit, track your status, and schedule inspections online.
We highly recommend submitting permit applications, construction documents, and plans through the City’s Customer Self service (CSS) when possible. Please note: we do not receive notifications outside of the initial submittal, so please follow-up with an email to staff to avoid processing delays if you upload supplemental documents through the portal. The available permit types are as follows:
Commercial: new, alteration, an addition
Multi Family: new, alteration and addition
Residential: new, alteration and addition
Commercial and Residential Swimming Pool: new and alteration/repair
Commercial and Residential Fence: new and alteration
An account is not required to pay for permits. A search of the invoice number will allow for payment
Once the permit application is approved, the applicant will receive an e-mail notification to log in to their CSS account to pay for the permit. Once the permit is paid, permit status will be updated to ‘Issued’ in 1 – 2 business days.
Once the permit status is ‘Issued’, the applicant can log into their CSS account, print the permit placard for display at the project site, and work can commence.
Commercial and Residential projects are to be submitted at stations 11 & 12 with a Development Coordinator. Development Coordinators also answer questions relating to most permitting processes and other City related inquires.
The Customer Service Coordinator at the front of the Permit Center processes all new Single Family projects. This process can be initiated using our Customer Self Service Portal or by coming into the Permit Center.
Stations 1 through 4 are the Permit Center's Permit Technicians. Building Permits, Sub Trade Permits and Business Licenses are issued at these stations.
You can renew or apply for a new Business License, Home Occupation License, Business license CO, Taxi and Limousine licenses and more.
