Project Overview
The City of Charleston is planning a major redesign of the W.L. Stephens Aquatic Center and surrounding Forest Park in West Ashley.
Funded through the 2023 Parks and Recreation Bond Referendum, this project represents one of the city’s top priorities in its Parks and Recreation Master Plan.
Originally built in 1970, the aging facility will be replaced with a modern, year-round aquatic center featuring a 25-meter by 25-yard indoor pool and a dedicated therapy pool to support swim lessons, rehabilitation, and water aerobics. The new building will span approximately 24,000 to 28,000 square feet and provide a state-of-the-art recreation hub for the community.
In addition to the new aquatic center, the project includes upgrades to Forest Park such as a multipurpose community room, office space, a new playground, and renovated tennis and basketball courts.
