Suspects Arrested After Series of Car Break-ins

The Charleston Police Department has arrested three suspects on multiple charges relating to car break-ins in the Grand Oaks neighborhood of West Ashley.

On May 15, 2025, shortly before 11 p.m. officers responded to a call for an individual breaking into cars on Dorothy Drive. The first officer arrived and confronted three suspects actively trying to enter a car. All three fled on foot. 

After a foot pursuit, and with tracking assistance from a CPD K9, all three suspects were arrested in the area. 

  • Jalen Rahmond Ellis (25, of North Charleston) is charged with three counts of breaking into a motor vehicle, two counts of tampering with a vehicle, and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
  • A 15-year-old suspect, (of North Charleston) is charged with three counts of breaking into a motor vehicle, and two counts of tampering with a motor vehicle. 
  • A 17-year-old suspect, (of North Charleston) is charged with three counts of breaking into a motor vehicle, and two counts of tampering with a motor vehicle. 

Ellis is currently being held at the Al Cannon Detention Center pending a bond hearing. The two juveniles were transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice.

While tracking down the suspects, neighborhood residents provided witness information and video camera footage that was crucial to making these arrests.
