CITY OF CHARLESTON HOSTS PUBLIC MEETING FOR TWO-WAY TRAFFIC FEASIBILITY STUDY

City of Charleston News Flash Posted on August 29, 2025

As part of a comprehensive study to evaluate the feasibility of converting Coming Street, Rutledge Avenue, and Ashley Avenue from one-way to two-way traffic, the City of Charleston is hosting host a public meeting on Thursday, September 4th, from 5-7 PM at Bethel United Methodist Church (57 Pitt Street). The meeting will provide an opportunity for residents, business owners, and stakeholders to review the study’s findings, ask questions, and share feedback. Community input will play an important role in shaping the future of this project.

The City’s Department of Traffic and Transportation launched the study in April 2025, engaging the nationally recognized transportation firm Kimley-Horn to complete an existing conditions review and conduct preliminary analysis. The study examines how a conversion could affect traffic flow, parking, mobility, safety, and neighborhood livability.

These three corridors run through the medical district and several historic neighborhoods, making the study’s findings particularly important to residents, businesses, and institutions alike. The neighborhoods most directly impacted include Harleston Village, Radcliffeborough, Westside, and Cannonborough/Elliottborough, though all community members are encouraged to attend and participate.
