The Charleston Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is investigating a fatal auto-pedestrian collision that occurred just before 10 p.m. on November 24, 2025, on I-526 East at the Westmoreland Bridge.
A pickup truck traveling on I-526 struck one worker’s hand, then hit a second worker in a work zone. The second worker sustained significant injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where they later died. The driver of the pickup truck stopped immediately and remained on scene.
I-526 East was blocked until around 1:45 a.m.
No charges have been filed as the circumstances of the collision remain under investigation. Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact the Charleston Police Department Traffic Unit at (843) 965-4084. Tips can also be submitted anonymously at www.charleston-sc.gov/tips.
This incident marks the eleventh fatal traffic-related collision investigated by the Charleston Police Department this year.
