Suspect Charged with Murder in Downtown Homicide

The Charleston Police Department has charged a suspect with murder in the shooting death of Briana Cason.

On April 27, 2025, at approximately 8:30 p.m., officers patrolling near Johnson Street in downtown Charleston heard gunfire and located an adult female victim who had been fatally shot. Investigators determined the shooting occurred during a fight involving several individuals. 

On April 28, 2025, detectives arrested Tyris Asbury (39, of North Charleston) for firing a handgun during the incident. He is charged with three counts of assault and battery first degree.

Further investigation identified Kenneth Da’Quan Gilliard, 23, of Charleston, as having fired a handgun during the altercation. Gilliard was arrested on May 1, 2025, and initially charged with three counts of assault and battery first degree. On May 2, he was additionally charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

Both suspects are currently in custody at the Al Cannon Detention Center.
