Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)

Program Overview

The Community Development Block Grant is a federal program created under the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 and is administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This program provides grant funds to local and state government to be used to develop viable urban communities by:

  • Creating suitable living environment
  • Expanding economic opportunities
  • Providing decent housing

Awarded FundsCDBG

CDBG funds have been awarded to the Department of Housing and Community Development from HUD for over 40 years. Through the administration of these funds we are able to provide various services to eligible City of Charleston residents directly through the in-house programs and by providing grants and loans to organizations to assist in achieving the goals of our department. Some of the eligible activities for the use of CDBG funds are noted below:

  • Economic Development assistance
  • Fair Housing activities
  • Health initiatives
  • Housing construction and rehabilitation
  • Youth programs
